Minus 1 Degree Farenheit

This morning I woke before dawn to get busy with the tasks of the day.  I checked the outside temp (New Englanders and checking the weather just go together you know) and for the first time this winter the temp was below zero.  I let the water get extra hot before my shower and reminded my husband to throw more wood on the fire.  Then off to the first task of the day I went - chickens, but then I paused as the cold air hit my face and I ran back inside for the camera -
I never actually thought I’d be writing thisbut minus 1  can be so stunning -

Cold, but beautiful, right out my back door!
The barn is surrounded by hay bales for the winter, stacked two high on the north (back) side of the coop,  to help keep the snow and wind out and the ground a bit warmer inside.  This allows the hens to get out of the roosting house everyday and enjoy fresh air and sunshine - I'm so glad we put the skylight panels in on the roof, they love it.  I know they’'re fine, they have a cozy roosting house, heated water and they'’re still laying plenty of eggs, but I can’t help think every morning as I look at the outside temperature that my ladies must be cold!  And if you are not a "morning person" or have trouble waking up - I can tell you all you need is to step outside on a cold winter morning in New Hampshire and I promise you'll wake right up - then If you're like me you'll work as quickly as you can and

run back inside and remember all over again why I love our woodstove
after working outside in the barn and skiing all day :-)
Wishing you all a wintry weekend - stay warm!
-Erin
P.S.  Really must buy more Smartwool socks

  1. Those are stunning photos. Even though I'm not a cold weather person, I can say that usually when it's below zero outside the sky is clear and blue and usually not so windy which makes for a beautiful day. Glad you can enjoy the minus temps. Also good to hear that your chickens are faring and well and still producing eggs.
