The long holiday weekend brought with it the start to the yard sale season here in New England.
So naturally I was out the door at the crack of dawn to find some new treasures...

Mason jar mugs - one can never have too many of those...
Vintage tupperware in bright sunny yellow and orange - coordinates with my "Julia" cookbooks and tools next to the mixer
early 1900's - very practical on the farm... can't wait to put these to good use :-)
A lovely circa 1978 Smith-Cornona complete with case, original manual and 5 new ribbons-
all for a special little 7 year old girl who has been wishing for her very own typewriter for over a year -
she has been busy typing everything since we found it!

A massive collection of hardcover Hardy Boys books (even more than pictured here) - perfect for my 10 yr. old
Cole is already well into the 4th book of the 30+ I found at 10 books for a dollar
And I just couldn't pass these truly stunning items,

And I just couldn't pass these truly stunning items,
lovely handmade vintage linens from a time long before now,
I do believe I'm in love with all that stitching
6 place mats and a table runner - all hand stitched - amazing
Square table cloth embroidered with snowflakes...
2 more square table cloths,
one with 4 different corners (gardening motifs) and one with a beautiful floral teapot -
and a few more crocheted items...

32 different hand embroidered linen napkins and hankies
I chose only my favorites from hundreds of pieces I saw that day. Each tablecloth and napkins in packs of 8 & 12 selling for a mere one or two dollars.
I can't help but wonder who made all these beautiful things & how did they come to end up in church and yard sales?
Why were they not passed down to daughters, granddaughters and so on?
Because I myself craft and find such value in all that is handmade, I know that a piece of the crafter's soul is embedded in every little stitch.
I feel honored to now be the caretaker of these beautiful pieces of handwork and feel inspired by and connected to the women that have come before me.
Vintage finds and the beginning of many warm Summer Days ahead -
Welcome June!

Oh WOW! These are all great finds. I don't know how you do it!
ReplyDelete10 books for $1 is incredible! and those vintage linens remind me of the ones my grandparents had (and most likely still have) and took out for special occasions.
And yes, I do remember trying out my dad's typewriter when I was little...Nikki's age or maybe smaller.
for some reason my post didnt take, those are egg baskets for boiling eggs right? Looks like some nice finds.
ReplyDeleteJen
Jen - very close. They are actually egg collection baskets that collapse flat for storage. They also were designed to be hung from a hook inside the coop so that Rats wouldn't be able to get the eggs until the farmer brought them into the house at the end of the day. When fully opened they are quite stiff and would protect eggs on the sides and tops for the journey from coop to farmhouse - since often it was the little kids collecting the eggs - I can see my kids with a basket full of eggs swinging in their hands across the yard and oops there goes an egg - anyway, great egg basket design - can't wait to use them :-)
ReplyDeleteHey, I just noticed my comment didn't work either. I looked at the other Jen that posted here, and I actually thought it was my comment but didn't remember posting what she said...LOL. I actually put figured out the the baskets were for egg collecting (do I get a prize for guessing right, LOL?). I also said that Mike would be so jealous of the Hardy Boys books because he loves those and Nancy Drew. He's read a couple of Nancy Drew with the girls so far each night at bed. Love all your great finds!
