Brown Beauty

Today, Jane, one of our 2 golden buff hens
was the first of our flock to lay an egg!
She along with several other hens have been scoping out the wooden eggs in the nests for about a week now
and hanging out in the nests making happy hen noises,
so we knew one of them would lay soon.
Our first brown beauty from such a sweet, beautiful little hen,
Naturally, We're all a bit excited here on the homestead!
I think that little egg made an ordinary Tuesday a special Tuesday, don't you?
Back later this week, with news from the canning front
and the Summer Onslaught of baseball bat sized zucchini -
Until then, wishing you a Tuesday equally as special!

  1. Oh, so exciting! I'm assuming the wooden eggs are to help the hens think they are already sitting on actual eggs?!? Jane looks very proud of her hard work.

  2. Jen,

The wooden eggs help the hens learn that the nests are where the eggs go, otherwise new hens can have a tendency to lay on the coop floor or on the ground, which is not good b/c the eggs get dirty or broken. This could also lead to egg eating by the hens (which I've read is a hard habit to break). The wooden eggs are said to discourage egg eating b/c the hens peck them but nothing happens, no food, so they learn eggs are not for pecking. So far so good, Jane figured out that the nests where the wooden eggs sit are where her eggs should go, hopefully the other hens will follow her lead :-)
