This morning our new baby chicks arrived at 7:23am, happy, healthy and peeping! They were born on Monday afternoon, April 19th. We ordered 13 hens, all brown egg layers, and 1 rooster, but only 13 arrived in our box due to a low hatch rate and late hatch time at the hatchery. We're not sure if we got a rooster or not? I guess we'll be able to tell in about 8 weeks if the ladies have a man. Our hens will also be a bit of a guessing game because we ordered an assortment of brown layers, they guarantee at least 3 different varieties from a list of 15 but don't tell you which ones were actually shipped. We can clearly see we have at least 5 different varieties. I think we'll have fun identifying the hens in the weeks to come - Cole is already on the internet looking at chick breed photos and making some guesses and Nikki is busy choosing names for each one.
In the coming weeks, I'll be sharing their new "New England Barn Style" coop with you,
but for now they're calling a cozy custom homemade brooder (made by my talented, handy husband) - with cat proof lockable doors - home :-)
Oh, no you didn't! Mike has been dying to get some chickens to raise. He even purchased a book recently on keeping chickens. I absolutely cannot let him see this.
ReplyDeleteThose chicks are so cute. My girls would be doing the same as Nikki naming and loving each and every one.
I'm totally gushing here. They're beautiful! Your brooder is great. I'm busy reading up on duck egg incubation...hopefully starting tomorrow evening! Read about it at www.theknittygrittyhomestead.blogspot.com!
